There is a general consensus amongst many people, when the wisdom value of the biblical book of Proverbs is the subject matter, that it is indeed a book filled with wise tips that could help anyone live a peaceful and prosperous life. With most, if not all of its chapters having being written by King Solomon, this should be of no surprise to anyone considering that he was the one whom Jehovah promised and gave so much wisdom that no one before or after him is expected to surpass. Only an unwise person will ignore such a rich human source of divine wisdom.

Its wisdom words are usually paired in a single verse with each suggested act of wisdom paired with its corresponding benefit, if the advise contained there in is adhered to, but occasionally, like in the foundation scripture for today’s Devotional, two or more verses are used to emphasize a specific wisdom act aimed at achieving a favourable result. The scripture today focuses on one of the possible reasons why many people will remain poor and not prosper.

That prosperity is important in this realm is not in doubt as it is one of the factors that will make life very good and enjoyable. Without the necessary prosperity, living in this world can be as bad as that of the life which Lazarus lived. Though this may not have any effect on how life after life is spent, there is nothing wrong in enjoying the life of prosperity similar to that of the rich man, but in a godly manner as that too may not impact negatively on how life after life is spent. To be prosperous in in this realm simply remains the best choice to make as that has always been the plan of Jehovah for man after his creation. The bible reveals that Jehovah blessed man declaring that they should increase, multiply, replenish the earth and dominate it – Gen. 1:26-30.

However many people, Christians inclusive are not manifesting this declared prosperity, rather they find themselves in the deep end of poverty, a state which the wise king in today’s foundation scripture says is possibly because such a person prefers to be tight-fisted instead of freely giving – Prov. 11:24. According to the wise king;

  1. The one who gives freely will prosper as the refreshing effect of the act on the benefactor will attract similar gestures, from Jehovah and even men – Prov. 11:25. Truth be told, there is no one on earth that is self sufficient, as we all look forward to attaining some form of goal or the other. The one that does not want to give will always give the excuse of not having but nothing can be farther from the truth than this. Every human being has something to give, may be not in varied quantities and probably not in all situations and to all people, but there is no arguing the fact that only the tight-fisted will claim to always have nothing to give. The wise king is however not referring to just giving but that one who gives freely. To give freely is to give without any attached condition or ignoble objectives, known or unknown to men as the intention for giving remains open to Jehovah who is able to read through the thoughts of men. Giving under such conditions will definitely be rewarded as Jehovah remains faithful to His words, even when men decide to be ungrateful. Do not just give but give freely and you will be given that same desire that you also lack, as prosperity in this instance covers all the areas of life that man may be experiencing lack of what is required to live a good and comfortable life.
  2. The one who is generous will grow and glow under the prayer of people unlike the tight-fisted one who will be under constant curses from them – Prov. 11:26. One may argue that not everyone who makes a prayer gets the required response as some people simply pronounce words of prayers which are more of simple reaction to the situation they find themselves in but do not back such up with the belief and Will power that it will receive approval, but the fundamental truth is that the one whose needs have just been met will definitely be happy, even if it is only for a split second, and words spoken at such critical moments do have sufficient effect in the spiritual realm. Similarly, the one who has been deprived of a favour by another, who is believed to be in a position to grant such favour, is also able to attain this spiritual height, such that curses pronounced at such times become very effective. You will definitely need prayers of others to achieve those desires that are currently out of your reach and affecting your chances of prospering and granting those little favours to others mY just be the key to getting them.
  3. Natural laws ensure that those who seek good by their actions will always get good things unlike those who seek evil and will be rewarded adequately with evil – Prov. 11:27. It actually takes one with the good spirit to think and do good as it is impossible to get a good fruit from a bad tree – Matt. 7:15-20; 12:33. The one with a good spirit will always attract positivity and same can be said of the one who is tight-fisted. It is simply the product of a spirit that does not care about the comfort of others even when such is in a position to help. Such may even give with ignoble intentions as it is impossible to have blessing from Satan without a negative consequence. Like, it is said, attracts like and the one who is in a position to give free support but chooses not to, should not expect any form of support during his/her own assured trial times, after all, it is known that one can only reap what was sown.

It is therefore, not rocket science for the one who chooses to be tight-fisted to see why poverty and negative occurrences will not be to far away. Learn to be generous in the right way and at the right moments as that may just be the solution to that poverty that is depriving you of the benefits that should rightly be yours as a Christian and as declared by Jehovah. May God teach us to be generous in Jesus name. Amen.
