For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. – Heb. 4:12 KJV

The Devotional today is the second part of the Devotional with the same title where the Christian was made to realise that a life of unbelief can be very harmful and filled with danger as Jehovah not only gets angry that He is not being trusted but also sees the unbelieving Christian as a rebel. It is therefore important for the Christian that does not intend to incur the wrath of Jehovah to avoid completely the life of unbelief as the result of such will only be regrets.
However the one that desires to believe must know what to believe in, without which the desire to believe may actually lead to believing in very wrong doctrines. The Christian that aspires to believe must read, hear, know, understand and live in the Word of God.
The Word of God is simply the Word that Jehovah is the author of. It may be that written in the Christian Holy Book or those spoken through His prophets, past and present. The Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy noted that all that is in the scriptures are inspired of God and are useful for teaching, correction and reproof – 2Tim. 3:16-17. The one who dwells in them therefore is able to learn the things of Jehovah and make adjustments when and where necessary else such may receive the rebuke of the loving father – Prov. 3:12 .
The foundation scripture for today’s Devotional states clearly that
- The Word of Jehovah is quick. This makes it clear that the Word in reference is not the printed words of the Holy Bible which are group of letters used to describe what Jehovah and did at some point in history of men. The “Word” refers to the activeness of the pronouncements of Jehovah which he says is very much alive. They are not ordinary words because they will do what they are sent to do and like Jehovah Himself remain eternal and relevant in all seasons. Jehovah Himself while letting all know that He rates His Words more than His name makes it clear that His Word will not return to Him void – Isa. 55:11.
- The Word of Jehovah is powerful. A powerful word is one that has the ability to cause changes. At the pronouncement of an earthly ruler, things move around and changes are effected but no earthly ruler can be as effective in this regard as the self existing One called Jehovah. All things came into existence simply by His Words and He has not lost that ability. Wars come to an end and lives are turned around at His pronouncements, and everything living and non-living respond to His Words. They are indeed very powerful.
- Though the physical blade cuts through only physical objects, the Word of Jehovah is sharper than any two-edged sword with ability to cut through the soul and spirit, with the physical manifestation of both acts in the body. It has the ability to change an individual spiritually with the effect of that action being a changed person in character and speech. It can re-shape destinies because of its ability to penetrate the minds of men and cause changes.
- The Word of Jehovah has the ability to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart of man. With the Word, man is able to differentiate good from evil and be able to make informed judgements and decisions in life. With the active Word in operation at all times, man’s chances of making regrettable decisions is very limited if not completely eliminated.
Unless the Christian does not believe that the Word spoken by Jehovah has such abilities, there should be no reason why one who has access to such a great weapon, which can be useful in fighting both physical and spiritual battles, should have any doubt whatsoever that there is any battle that will not be won. Most Christians have chosen to be well lettered in the Word, sometimes with ability to quote every section of it off-head, but really have no faith in it. It is not unusual to hear Christians repeat quotes that were either taught by their spiritual leaders or they may have heard their spiritual leaders use at some point or the other successfully, and so choose to repeat such, but really the Word of Jehovah does not work like that. It is not a product of how much you can repeat it verbatim as it is written in the version of the Bible that you know, but about its quickness in the life of the Christian. The Word in the Christian speaks in the spiritual, even before the Christian makes a verbal pronouncement and so is able to create the necessary environment for victory, such that the enemy is defeated even before the Christian raises a finger in battle – Matt. 8:28-29; Acts 16:17.
Invite the Word into your life and let it run every action and step that you take. It is not sufficient to read it or quote it profusely but it must be allowed to be actively involved in every decision making process of the Christian. That is the time that the Christian can benefit from having the active Word in operation in his/her life. May the Word of God remain active in all we do in Jesus name. Amen.
