For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. – Jude 1:4 NIV

Today’s devotional is a continuation of the devotional titled, “Contend For The Faith” where the message of Jude, the brother of Jesus Christ was described with two words, “contend” and “godless”. Whereas the first message was on the need for the Christian to contend for the true faith as entrusted to the holy people, today’s devotional addresses the reason why Jude desired that the Christian should contend for the true faith. According to him in the scripture that is the foundation of today’s devotional, some strange individuals had infiltrated the group. These were people;
- Whose condemnation had been written long time ago.
- They are ungodly people.
- They are perverts who have converted the grace of God to a license for immorality.
- They deny our only sovereign and Lord, Jesus Christ.
He was no doubt confirming that amongst the brethren were people who were not sincere in their Christian beliefs and are within the fold for reasons that are not too noble. It seems these people who entered then, rather than leave have only continued to increase within the fold of genuine brethren but more importantly, they seem to have now occupied very important positions of authority and power. The implication is the entrenching of negative doctrines that have over time done more damage than good, if at all there is any good to Christendom. That remains the more reason why the genuine Christian today need to depend more than ever on the direct teachings of the Holy Spirit and continue to use such teachings as the standard in assessing which leader he/she should follow. The Christian today should never forget that responsibility for the spiritual and physical safety of his/her soul rest on him/her.
These group of people in their position of authority and power are able to perpetuate more damage because according to Jude, these are people whose condemnation have been written and concluded long time ago. These group of people know where they are destined for and all they are currently doing is to recruit more people into their destination. So they are deliberately twisting the interpretation of the scriptures in order to mislead innocent Christians into destruction. It is in order to avoid these people that Christ advised the Christian to seek to have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, so the Christian can have no excuse on why he/she became a victim. These agents of the devil no longer operate from outside but operate from positions of authority and power within Christendom. These people whom Jude describes as religious perverts, operating under the disguise of being Christians use the grace of God as a platform to practice immorality. By this, these wolves in sheep clothing deliberately violate moral laws and standards excusing it on the platform of Grace but they forget that it is not possible to continue to sin deliberately after one has claimed to be a Christian and expect Grace to remain – 1Jn. 3:9; 5:18. No genuine Christian will be happy to continue in immorality simply because of the existence of Grace – Rom. 6:23. The truth is that there is no grace for such as the same scripture reveals that it will be impossible for the one who sins after enjoying the Grace to be restored – Heb. 6:1-6; 10:26-27.
These people by this kind of action deny the sovereignty and Lordship of Jesus Christ. Although they claim to be Christians and sometimes, even Christian leaders, their actions actually make nonsense of the entire coming, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as it seeks to nail him to the cross again – Heb. 6:4-6. Jesus in coming back is not coming to die again but to judge the world and whoever believes he/she, can by his/her conduct, rubbish all the good works that he did before his ascension to heaven will be on a journey to self deceit. He remains Lord over everything – Phil. 2:9. After his death, he descended into hell and took the one that takes captives captive and brought the gift of salvation to mankind – Eph. 4:8. By his resurrection, he rendered death powerless and its sting lost its potency – 1Cor. 15:55-58. By his death, he disgraced the devil and his agents by making a public spectacle of them (Col. 2:15) so no action of these hypocritical and deceitful people hiding under the cloak of being born again can deny his sovereignty and Lordship over all. He remains king forever and the genuine and smart Christian will learn to see Christianity from the doctrines presented by the Holy Spirit and not by these supposed fellow brethren or worse still leaders. Such Christian must learn to contend for the true faith and not what these fake Christians are preaching.
There can be no acceptable excuse for anyone who falls victim of the deception of these group of people as entry and exit into Christendom is open to all for as long as Jesus is yet to arrive. The wheat and chaff must continue to grow together until the day of harvest – Matt. 13:24-30. All people must know that the real Christian is not one by name but by fruits and so must seek to confirm the fruits before accepting claims of individuals to being Christians – Matt. 7:16-27. That is not being judgmental but being very protective of one’s soul from corruption. When he returns, the excuse of being misled by the leader or a co-christian will never be tenable. Work out your salvation today with wisdom so you do not find yourself amongst those that will be rejected and destroyed on the last day. May God grant us all the wisdom to identify and avoid godless people in Jesus name. Amen.
