The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my Lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two! – 1Kgs 3:26 NIV

King Solomon had just returned to Jerusalem from Gibeon where he offered a thousand bulls as sacrifice to the Lord. This action of his impressed the Lord who then promised to bless him more than anyone before or after him in addition to granting him the wisdom he had asked for in prayer when he was asked to make a request by the Lord – 1Kgs. 3:1-15. Two women who the Bible called prostitutes had approached him on his return to Jerusalem for arbitration with one accusing the other of attempting to convert her baby to hers after lying on her baby while sleeping and snuffing life out of her baby. According to her, both of them live in the same house and had given birth to babies, three days apart but she slept on hers in the night, snuffed life out of hers and exchanged her baby for hers while she was asleep. She woke up to realise what her neighbour had done and identified the dead baby placed by her side as not hers whilst the living baby her neighbour was holding was hers. Her neighbour in her response denied all that she had been accused of insisting that the living baby was hers – 1Kgs. 3:16-23.
At this point, King Solomon had to arbitrate and in doing so asked that the living baby be split into two equal parts for each woman to have a part – 1Kgs. 3:24-25. The response of both women is the foundation of today’s scripture. Whereas the accused woman promptly agreed with the suggestion of the king, the accuser rejected it. She will rather have the baby given to the accused woman than end up with a dead child, a response which convinced King Solomon that she indeed was the rightful mother of the living baby or at least was deserving of having the baby since she showed motherly emotion.
If indeed she was the rightful mother, then one can conclude that she was lucky to have met with a wise king because with another arbitrator, she may have been left with a different decision that may have deprived her of her joy due to her carelessness and lack of diligence in playing her role as a mother. She could have avoided all the tension and stress she went through if only she was more diligent in her role as a mother.
Most Christians today are sleeping when they should be awake and alert and in the process are losing or have lost a blessing that should rightfully be theirs. Instead of blaming themselves for all that they are experiencing, they are blaming all the witches and wizards in the world for the tussle they are facing. They are being challenged at several point where they should ordinarily be having unfettered access to blessing due to their carelessness and lack of conscientiousness about the blessing that they possess. They are struggling to retain the joy or worse still losing it and they continue to accuse friends, neighbours and family members for the situation they have put themselves into. What these group of Christians however failed to realise is that they are living in a competitive world where all are expected to be diligent in whatever they have or are doing or wherever they find themselves. This world is for both Christians and non-Christians alike and being a Christian should not be an excuse for being careless with the joy that one has.
The Almighty God will not teach the Christian the need to protect a joy that he/she has received from Him even though He may offer to help if a request for such is made. Such request will definitely be the reaction of someone who appreciates what he/she has and has the desire to keep such with divine help and support.
The urge to protect such blessing is in itself a sign of appreciation of what the person possesses and this does not require prayer, just as the erroneous belief that “not wishing evil for anyone is enough security to save such from being a victim of evil”, will be regretted.
The Almighty God gave man the ability to think and knowing that you need to protect what is yours will not require prayers. Be diligent with matters concerning your life else you will always be a loser and that will not be because the Lord is not living, or because of witches and wizards around you but because you chose to be negligent. He will help you if you help yourself. Be diligent with your blessings as you may not be as lucky as the woman to have what you have lost back. Be a smart Christian as that will ensure that you are not a losing Christian. May God grant you wisdom to protect all that He has bestowed on you in Jesus name. Amen.
