Joshua had just been installed as the leader to succeed Moses and take the Israelites to the Promise Land with the Lord advising him to be strong and courageous and observe all the instructions He gave to Moses, in the battles ahead – Josh. 1:7. Ahead of them on the other side of the Jordan River was Jericho and in strategising on how to take over the land, he had secretly sent two spies from Shittim to go and look over the land, especially Jericho. Both men arrived Jericho and lodged in the house of Rahab, a woman whom the Bible called a prostitute – Josh. 2:1. The King of Jericho, on being aware of the presence of the men in the home of Rahab instructed that she release the men lodging in her home to him but she denied their presence in her home while she chose to hide them away from the messengers of the king. Seeing that the coast was clear for the men to escape and return home, she lowered them with a rope through the window of her home, outside the city wall as her house sat on the wall of the city – Josh. 2:4-15.
She however did not send them away without having a conversation with them and drawing a promise from them. She informed them of the awareness of all the people of Jericho that the Israelites were on their way to take over the city as it seems to be the plan of the Almighty God and so had them promise her that they will spare not just herself, but all her family members when they arrive to take over the land. They equally accepted her demands on the condition that all the people she wanted protected along side herself should remain under her roof whilst she ties a scarlet cord on the same window by which they were let down as an identifier – Josh. 2:8-20. The foundation for today’s devotion is that request that she made asking for the two men to promise her that she and her family members will be spared. Both men fulfilled their promise when the Israelites eventually ran over Jericho in a miraculous manner and every living thing in Jericho was destroyed except Rahab whom the Bible called a prostitute and her family members – Josh. 6:15-25. They had been spared in accordance with the promise made to her and the directives of Joshua.
The social status of Rahab did not matter at critical and life defining moments as all that mattered was the information she had and her intention to work with it. From the submission of Rahab to the spies, she was not the only one that was aware of the information that the Lord had taken the decision to hand over the land to the Israelites – Josh. 2:8-11. The difference was that she was the only one that decided to take the appropriate action on the information.
Most Christians today are at different stages of discomfort and pain for either not been properly informed about their situation or acting inappropriately on the information they have about their situation. Appropriate information about a situation is without argument power, as it provides knowledge which remains a major tool that the children of God must possess to avoid been destroyed – Hos. 4:6. The one that acts on a situation before seeking the right information about the situation will likely have regrets or may not even be alive to express any regrets. That remains a major reason why the lives of many Christians are in a mess today. The Gibeonites saved themselves from being destroyed because they acted properly on the information they got about the advancing Israelites whilst all the kings, west of Jordan chose to war and they lost everything – Josh. 9:1-6.
Wisdom to act appropriately obviously has nothing to do with financial or social status or maybe even spiritual status, as it would be expected that their would have been priests and several highly spiritual people in Jericho who would have been destroyed with the rest of the people in Jericho. Rahab was no doubt a wise person and her wisdom saved her and her entire family and it is not surprising that she became a very important personality amongst a people that she was initially not part of. She was listed in the lineage that produced Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world – Matt. 1:5. She had subsequently gotten married to Salmon of the tribe of Judah and gave birth to Boaz.
Indeed it may be true that you are not in any way a bonafide member of the group you have found yourself in but that is not the reason why you are not been recognised or making progress. Rahab was a prostitute and a non-Jew but she not only saved herself and her family, but became very important to Christians in particular and humanity in general. Seek after true information, act on it appropriately and you are on the path to not only saving yourself but excelling in whatever environment you may have found yourself.
