Moses in an attempt to mediate between two Israelites who had a disagreement had been clearly rebuffed with one of the combatants accusing him of wanting to kill him just as he had done to an Egyptian earlier – Exo. 2:11-14. This was an event that truly happened but he thought he had it covered and it was and remained a secret but the awareness that it was not, like he thought, and the attempt by Pharaoh to kill him on hearing of the incident made him run for his life as he fled to Midian – Exo. 2:15. He quickly settled down to life there as he got married to Zipporah who was the daughter of his boss, Jethro and  had a son named Gershom – Exo. 2:16-22.

It was on one of those occasions while he was on duty herding the sheep of his boss that he noticed strange fire burning a portion of the bush but of greater significance was the fact that the fire did not consume the bush. Wanting to take a closer look to satisfy his curiosity, his experience became more strange as a voice came from that same location and introduced himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – Exo. 3:1-6. This was after he had cautioned him not to get closer to the burning bush and to take off his shoes as the location he was standing in was a holy ground. The reaction of Moses was instant and he hid his face on hearing this voice, as he was afraid to look at God, the same face he was to later plead to see after a better interaction with God – Exo. 33:12-23.

Worthy of observation at this stage of this devotion are the following:

1. The Almighty God introducing himself as the one in the burning bush brings to the awareness of all, one of the several ways of manifestation of His presence, which is in fire. He was to later in the several portions of the scriptures come down as fire sometimes to consume sacrifices (Lev. 9:23-24; 1Kgs. 18:38) and sometimes to indicate judgement – Psa. 11:6; 1Cor. 3:13; Rev. 20:10-15. Of course, in this instance He did not consume the platform that accommodated Him but His presence indeed took over the entire surrounding of that bush. When God inhabits a man or comes into the environment of an individual, He takes over the entire life in reference and the effect of His presence will be dependent on the state of the one whom he inhabits. The prophet Jeremiah says his refusal to deliver His message leaves him with a feeling of fire in his bones. It must be noted that He will not require permission to come into any life He so desires, so it is important for all, especially the Christian to always keep his/her soul ready to welcome Him.
2. The presence of the Lord in that location, made the place Holy and required that all who step on it show reverence for the location. There is no doubt that the location in reference is familiar to Moses. He had been passing that same location practically on a daily basis, while on his daily chores, and did not at any point, have to remove his shoes, but on this occasion, the spirituality of the location had changed because of the presence of the personality of the Almighty God. He had to thread on that space with reverence. There is no doubt that the presence of God in the life of a Christian or in any location, whatsoever, will confer on such person or location a status that will make all that encounter such life or be in that location, accord it the deserved reverence due to the Almighty God. At that point, the honour is no longer for the individual or location but for the one that is residing in such individual or location. Such lives or locations cannot be stepped upon with dis-respect and disregard as they will be accorded great honour by all simply because of the presence of God in such lives or locations. You can avoid all those dis-honour that you are presently experiencing from people by creating a conducive atmosphere in your life that will allow the presence of God to dwell there in. That probably explains why true men of God, irrespective of their social or financial standing, are accorded great respect and honour in all societies as it is the presence of God that is attracting the honour.

Your life too can take a turn for better if you can allow the fire of the Almighty God to consume your life with His presence, as honour will automatically replace all that dis-regard and dis-respect you are presently experiencing if He takes over your life. However, if you are one who feels that the respect people had for you has since disappeared or is waning, then you may need to confirm the continued presence of the fire of God in your life. It is simply impossible to have God’s fire burning in your life and be dis-honoured, with the one who attempts that not paying a great price for such an act. May God’s presence never depart from our lives in Jesus name. Amen.
