How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! – Isa. 14:12 NIV

The Almighty God had decided to create the entire universe and had spent five days creating it and its contents – Gen. 1:1-25. Everything but man was created within that period but on the sixth day he decided to create man in His image, and so invited the entire heavenly host to join Him in realising this His dream – Gen. 1:26. He was successful in this creation also, as He not only created man but created them male and female – Gen. 1:27. Since he created them in His image, man became a living being but had only immortal bodies.
Beyond man being created in the likeness of the Almighty God, He conferred by His pronouncements, the following advantages on man:
1. God granted man rulership over all the living creatures he had created earlier – vs. 26; 28b.
2. With His pronouncements and decreeing of blessings on man, He bestowed on man the abilities to be fruitful, increase, fill the earth and subdue the earth.
This was the Almighty God, the creator of all things handing over total authority and control of everything in the world to man. This was probably enough reason for Satan to be upset although it cannot and will never be sufficient to justify his rebellion. Considering the loyalty of the angels led by Lucifer himself, over the period, he probably found it difficult to understand why such a huge advantage will be given to man over them.
The reaction of Lucifer to this supposed unfairness of God is summarised the biblical of the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 14, verses 12 to 14 as follows. In his heart,
1. He planned to ascend to the heavens.
2. He planned to raise his throne above the stars of God.
3. He planned to sit, enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of mount Zaphon.
4. He planned to ascend above the tops of the cloud.
5. He planned to make himself like the Most High.
What a mutinous plan he had simply because he was unsatisfied with the way God allocated resources that belonged to nobody else but Him alone. The ultimate intention of those planned actions will be to probably dethrone the Almighty God and take charge, as he will need to do that to be like him. Inspite of all these being just thoughts in him, that he planned such a reaction was enough for him to earn the wrath of God and he instantly experienced God’s reaction as stated in the book of Isaiah, chapter 14, verses 15 – 19.
1. He was demoted to a level that made him spiritually dead – vs. 15.
2. The level was that low that people could not relate his low state with the amount of influence he wielded at the prime of his glory – vs. 16-17.
3. He was so low that even the low people rejected him as he was deemed not to fit into their standard – vs. 18-19.
All these happened to a once great man because of a mismanaged ambition.
There are many Christians today who are experiencing or have found themselves in the state that Lucifer is. The unfortunate bit of their situation is that everyone has been blamed for their situation aside from themselves. Most Christians actually behave like Lucifer today. They cannot just understand the rational behind God’s decision to grant some people some advantage that they lack or they desire. They have this sense of superiority over the one enjoying the favour of God and so cannot agree with the decision of God to grant such advantage when they lack it. Christians need to realise that God gives his grace to those whom he wishes and for reasons best known to him – Ex. 33:19. Your feeling of self worth has nothing to do with Him as He will have compassion for anyone He wishes to have compassion for. The Bible says that human righteousness is like filthy rags before Him so it is not about the state of righteousness – Is. 64:6. It is simply about His decision. So avoid Lucifer’s mistake by accepting his decision on how he shares his grace after all he owns it. Be contented with where he has placed you (1Tim. 6:6) and at best, rejoice with those that he seems to have favoured more than you – Rom. 12:15. He will not wait for the execution of those negative thoughts resulting from lack of contentment and probably envy. He will nip them in the bud by dealing with such a person before even the world knows what those negative plans are.
Save yourself from his wrath. Manage that ambition properly. It is not wrong to be ambitious but learn to be satisfied with what He has allocated to you. Then you will save yourself from demotion and disgrace. May God grant us all the ability to manage our ambition wisely and the spirit of contentment in Jesus name. Amen.
