Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. – Matt. 11:28 KJV

Today we continue with our scripture yesterday which dwelt on the invite of Jesus Christ to all who labour and are heavily laden promising to grant them rest. It is important for Christians to realise that if Christ would not do It, he will not say it. All that the Christian need do is to believe that no one goes to him and is shamed – Rom. 10:11; Ps. 25:3. Just cast all that weight on him because he cares – 1Pet. 5:7.
It is however not sufficient to just come to him as you need to put on his own yoke too which he says is easy and light – Matt. 11:30. You need to adhere strictly to a list of conditions for the relationship to yield the expected deserved rest for the soul.
Jesus himself gives the list of what needs to be done at that meeting in verse 29 of that same chapter 11 of the Book of Matthew. How the rest for the soul will come is better left to him as he alone knows what he will do to achieve that but all you have to do at that meeting is as follows:
1. Take his yoke upon yourself. His yoke, he says is not heavy. A yoke is a form of harness that is attached to an oxen with which the oxen pulls an attached cart. Of course the strength (weight) of the yoke is very much dependent on the weight of the cart that it is expected to carry but the ability of the oxen is hardly considered as it is fore-closed that it is its role to bear load. Likewise, life does not consider your ability before putting all the weights on you such that you begin to groan under them but you have an offer being presented to you by Jesus to exchange that your heavy weight with that of his. He is willing to take your own weight in exchange for his as his own weight is lighter. What is this yoke of his? It is for you to come to him believing him as the son of God, believing that he died and rose for the redemption of your sins, accepting him as your Lord and Saviour and commit to serving the only true God who is Jehovah in spirit and in truth. So it is all about taking the right decision to access this huge relief from all that stress of yours.
2. Learn from him. When you have accepted him as your Lord and Saviour, you will be expected to grow in him which will only come by acquiring knowledge. It cannot be a temporary decision or a stagnant life style after the decision. It cannot be the situation where you accept him today and go back tomorrow probably after the weight has been removed. It must be a life time decision neither can it be a situation where you want to continue to drink milk and not eat meat. You must grow to justify your new life in the Lord. All the nourishment for growth will be available in the zeal to acquire knowledge about him through the Word. To learn from Jesus Christ is to ask for the divine teacher he left for us (Jn. 14:18), the Holy Spirit to come into your life. He it is that will constantly nourish your soul with fresh knowledge so that you will continue to grow and attain the deserved rest for your soul.
3. He is meek and lowly in heart. All the promise can only be available for those who are genuinely humble in spirit like Jesus is. No matter how freely available this promise may be, any one that lacks the above attributes will not be able to access it because it is the father Himself that will not allow such a person to access it. At this point, it is no longer a decision of Jesus Christ but that of his father – Matt. 11:25. Why would you want unnecessary arrogance to deprive your soul of a deserved rest not only in this world but in the world to come?
Take the decision to come to him today with your mind made up to meet with all the conditions for being at that meeting. It is very dangerous to come to him and not meet with all those conditions as there will be serious regret in doing that. In the book of Matthew, chapter 22, verses 1 to 14, a similar situation played out in the parable of the wedding banquet where an invite was sent out and eventually one of the guests that came did not come properly dressed for the occasion. The Bible says that when the king came in and saw him, he inquired how he was able to come into the banquet hall and since the man had no response he ordered his assistants to not just throw the man out but bind him hand and foot and cast him into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. This is because it is one thing to be sent an invite but it is another to be found deserving of the reward of the invite. That could just be why your expectations have not been met since you came to him. You have not been properly dressed in terms of your attitude and character. Do not just come to him, come with a humble mind and a willingness to learn from the Holy Spirit and you can be sure of deserved rest for your soul in this world and in the after life in Jesus name. It is my prayer that you will see him as the solution to that heavy yoke that you are bearing and will approach for solution properly dressed in Jesus name, Amen.
