Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord , the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord . – 2Kgs 20:5 KJV

King Hezekiah reigned in Judah during the period of Prophet Isaiah’s active prophetic years. He was a king who was recorded to have conducted his affairs in line with the Will of God and God was happy with him such that he prospered in everything that he did – 2Kgs. 18:1-7. He was reported to be sick once and the Prophet Isaiah walked in, not to tell him what to do to get healed but that he should arrange his house and prepare for death. That prophecy as with several other people would have come as a rude shock to Hezekiah but he was calm about it. He did not attack Prophet Isaiah for giving him a negative prophecy out of hatred or evil wishes but he must have quickly thought to himself that Isaiah was not his creator and the decider of who lives or dies. He must have concluded that irrespective of Isaiah’s views about him, positive or negative, he was not the creator or the determinant of his life or its course. He took the appropriate decision to approach the sole creator of heaven and earth. The sole determinant of the direction of the life of a man and he was not disappointed. The result of that wise move by King Hezekiah is the scripture for today’s devotion.
God sent the same Prophet Isaiah back to King Hezekiah almost immediately to reverse the prophecy by adding fifteen more years to his existence on earth. He had actually exhausted his allotted years of existence on earth.
King Hezekiah was able to reverse the prophecy because he knew the God he served and he had a good relationship with that God. The Bible says those who know their God will do exploits – Dan. 11:32. Despite the great gift that Prophet Isaiah was associated with, King Hezekiah who could have just lazily relied on him being the king at that time still found it necessary to maintain quality and direct communication link with the Almighty God. That made it easy for him to do the needful when the very gifted messenger had to do only what he could do in that moment.
No matter how gifted that your spiritual pillar or mentor may be, a time will come when all he/she can do is to do the Will of the father for your life. At those times unlike when he can help save you from those enemies, he will not be able to do anything and it will all be left to you to do the needful. It is at times like these that, that great man of God that you have always relied on fails because at such times only you can help your self. God did not appoint any human being as your advocate so if you do not have the right advocate at times like this, you can immediately kiss success goodbye.
King Hezekiah maintained a very good credit rating with God and relied quickly on it as he drew down immediately on that credit in the time of need. In his petition to the Lord questioning the decision to terminate his life with that sickness, he leveraged on his record of goodness as acknowledged by the Lord. He pleaded with the Almighty God to
1. Remember how he had walked before Him in truth and with a perfect heart.
2. Remember how he had done that which is good in His sight.
3. All these he did, not arrogantly but with great emotion that can engender compassion by weeping sore.
What is your reaction to that negative prophecy about your life?
1. Was it to just ignore and accept it as the Will of God just as Eli did on the prophecy about his family (1Sam. 2: 27-36) and children? – 1Sam. 3:15-21. That with today’s scripture has proven to be a defeatist approach to a prophecy from a merciful God
2. Is it to pick up a quarrel with the messenger whether of God or not? That definitely is a wrong direction to go as it will solve nothing. This is something that requires only your intervention and even the supposed man of God is powerless in this kind of situation.
3. Your best choice is to go down the route that Hezekiah went but what is your credit rating with the Lord?
The truth remains that all those who have zero or low credit rating with the Lord will likely go along with any of the two earlier options and only someone who does not value his/her rating with the Lord will accept such negative prophecies when he/she is highly rated. It will take the intervention of the Lord, if such a person is lucky to remind him/her that there is an empowered rod at his/her disposal to be used to overcome such situations – Ex. 14: 16, 26.
There may be a negative prophecy that is currently raging in your life. This is the time to draw down on your credit with the Lord. It is however not a hopeless situation for you if you have come to the realisation that you have zero credit in your account with the Lord. You can be freely credited by someone who has sufficient credit to give. His name is Jesus Christ. All you have to do is to accept him as your Lord and Saviour and your account will be instantly credited. You immediately go into the good book of the Lord and he will immediately grant your request regarding that situation.
You do not have to accept that negative prophesy. Just change it today so that peace can return into your life. May God help you as you take the best decision for your life in Jesus name. Amen.
