Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly,… – Jonah 2:1 KJV

Jonah had thought in his mind that he could enforce his own wish at the expense of God’s wish. He was not going to carry out God’s instructions since he did not believe in it or agree with His line of thinking. So he decided to go in a direction different from that which God wanted him to go. His decision threatened the life of several other people who unknowingly entered the same ship with him until with human alertness and the wisdom of God, they escaped the danger that Jonah exposed them to. As far as God was concerned, the passengers in that boat were guilty by association. They lost all the goods they were travelling with but were lucky to escape with their lives.
One is not sure whether it was because Jonah was still obstinate at this point about his decision not to heed God’s instruction or it was the case that God needed to complete the period of punishment allotted for Jonah’s initial disobedience, but Jonah found himself in the belly of the fish. It was in this location that God forgave Jonah after his prayers which is the scripture for today and decided to land him directly in the location he had decided not to go.
One needs to imagine what Jonah would have been experiencing while in the belly of the fish, unlike when he was in the ship sleeping comfortably, that made him repent and decide to go back to God asking for forgiveness, but the belly of a fish is definitely not going to be the most comfortable place for any human being to be in. The condition in the belly of the fish will be comparable to those listed below but definitely not an exhaustive list.
1. There will be darkness.
2. There will be isolation and loneliness.
3. There will hunger.
4. There will be pain and discomfort.
5. All the mess that is in the fish will run on one.
6. There will be death starring at him directly.
All the above and possibly more will be the condition in the fish and will produce a great level of discomfort. It is definitely enough to breakdown anyone’s resolve no matter how strong he/she may be.
Most Christians today find themselves in conditions similar to that of being in a fish. All the above listed conditions characterise their lives as all attempts to get relief also presenting a huge threat to their very existence. One needs to do a self examination and ensure that one is not living a life in conflict with the God’s plan. Is there anything he wants you to do and you are not doing? The implication of that your stubbornness can be any of the following or more:
1. Your presence will always spell disaster for the personalities or the group you associate with who may begin to avoid you.
2. You and all associated with you will likely continue to lose personal properties.
3. You will lose respect and honour amongst people who will not be able to save you as attempting that will be at great risk to their own lives.
4. There will be fall from grace to grass.
5. Situations that brought comfort before will bring very serious discomfort.
6. Such life will only reflect the life of one living in darkness.
7. Such life will be characterised by challenges that look insurmountable.
Does any of the above fit into your current life situation? If yes, you may need to confirm if there is anything that God wants you to do and you have been refusing to do. If there is, know that no prayer session or any spiritual activity aside from obedience can get you out of that situation. God will not even allow death to touch you because that will allow you to get away with disobedience to God. You have only one choice which is to accept to do His Will right in that situation that you are in. Like the case of Jonah whose willingness to comply with the Will of God landed him in Nineveh, God will facilitate the conditions for you to have the opportunity to comply but it will still be your effort that will be required to carry out the instruction.
Save yourself further punishment and stress by complying with his instruction today and He will return all that you have lost include your comfort. May God help you to do the needful as He is always ready to restore you when you do so in Jesus name. Amen.
