And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. – Jonah 1:7 KJV

The shipmaster and his crew who were running the transport services by sea from Joppa to Tarshish must have thought to themselves that they have seen it all. They probably have been running that service for God knows how long so when they started on this particular cruise, and with these set of passengers they never expected what they experienced. It was completely strange as none of the forecasts for that journey said anything about the experience they were now having.
They were very sure something was wrong and whatever it was, was not natural. They were not also going to accept the theory that the event could just be a one off situation. They had travelled along that route for so long that every thing pointed to the supernatural. They had no option that to seek superior wisdom – Jms 1:5.
By the time they were done enquiring, the culprit was before them and had an explanation to make about this unusual situation.
One begins to wonder why unbelievers are always smarter than the children of light – Lk. 16:8. The average Christian today will either try to convince himself that it is a coincidence while some will say it is a natural event and nothing strange should be linked with the unusual situation. Some will probably start praying and speaking in tongues rebuking the situation and pleading the blood of Jesus while some will be involved in all kinds of prayers and vigils. Some will just go into the frustration mode and give up.
None of the above was the case with the shipmaster and his crew members. They knew they needed to take physical steps rather than spending too much time on endless prayers. They knew they needed spiritual clarification about the experience they were having and which they were convinced was not natural. They knew the root of the problem was internal and not external and the culprit when he was discovered had no choice but to accept his fate in the interest of the majority.
Many Christians do actually sense the unusual but the challenge comes when they need to discern and find out the source of the unusual events happening in and around them – 1Sam. 30:8. That is when they begin to derail and seek support and guidance from sources that are ungodly – 1Sam. 28:1-25.
Jesus Christ anticipated that Christians will find themselves in this kind of situation when they need to find out the stranger in the ship of their life that has brought them unusual challenges. He thus promised and eventually sent the Holy Spirit. That is what is needed in situations like this. This is because it is only the Holy Spirit that can reveal things beyond the human knowledge and also proffer appropriate solution for every situation – Jn. 14:18.
What is that thing that you were able to do with ease before now but has now become more of a challenge? Who is that friend that has suddenly become an enemy? What happened to that husband/wife that use to be a good lover but now is a bitter enemy? What happened to that child that used to have a huge potential but is now like a street urchin? All these including life that used to be seen as blessed one but suddenly looks cursed need to be view from with the eyes of the Holy Spirit who will not only discern the problem rightly and also give a very effective solution.
Are you one of those who believe the Holy Spirit is only for prophets and spiritual leaders? You are better off changing that perspective today and begin to ask for the Holy Spirit to come into your situation (Lk. 11:13) because that is the only person that can help throw light into that situation and also proffer solution that will get you out of it. Call on him today and ask for solution and you can be sure you are on your way out of that your situation that suddenly went bad.
May God through the Holy Spirit grant insight into our challenges and help us with divine solution to restore normalcy in our lives in Jesus name. Amen.
