“Let your light so shine before men…” – Matt. 5:16 KJV.
The above scripture can be seen as the conclusion of a very important sermon that was delivered by our Lord Jesus Christ on the mount. During that sermon which was delivered before a multitude and his disciples, he had specifically stated ten (10) major ways through which one can be blessed with blessings here definitely not limited to financial blessing alone – Matt. 5: 3-12.
He then went ahead to compare them with salt and light (Matt. 5:13-15) and further gave an advice which is the text for today. In that advice, he desired that the believers must let people see their good works so that God’s name will be glorified in their lives. He however made it clear that the obstacles to achieving that was they themselves with the use of the phrase “let your light”.
With that phrase he implied that it was their decision to take if their light will shine or not but advised they should allow it shine. He did not refer to any other person or thing that could constitute an obstacle to the shining of their light since by being believers they were already salt and light. If they were not shining, then it could only be their fault.
The above advice is also applicable to Christians in this generation. Genuinely accepting Christ as your Lord and Saviour immediately transforms you into light just like him. Yes the same one that the bible says darkness could not comprehend – Jn. 1:4-5. This is not a light that has a switch accessible to any other person but the individual concerned. He/she is the only one that can switch it on and off.
Another peculiarity of this light is that it is operated with a radial switch whose intensity can be varied – still by the individual. He/she can make it very bright just as it can be dimmed but as far as Christ is concerned, there is no advantage in a light that cannot reveal to unbelievers the activity of darkness so that its good effect will be appreciated by all and so bring glory to the name of God.
It is completely ridiculous for a Christian to attribute non performance to the activity of darkness as we are supposed to be carrying a light whose source darkness cannot comprehend. No one can put you off because they do not even understand the source of the energy that is powering your light. To attribute and confirm that your unacceptable situation is the result of the activities of agents of darkness is a sure confirmation that the Christian has switched off the light.
The solution to the above is not to start focussing counter activities at the supposed agents of this darkness but to switch on your light and YOU allowing it to shine “so bright”. It is a light that came into you the day you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. It is a light that confounds darkness because till today, darkness cannot and will never be able to understand.
Bother less about the source of that confirmed activity of the agents of darkness in your life and concentrate on fanning into flame the light in you – 2Tim. 1:6 NIV. The only thing that overcomes darkness is light and you do not pray for it, rather you walk in light because you are a child of light – Eph. 5:7-14. Take your eyes off darkness and it’s agents and focus completely on the light that is in you.
If however you do not have the light, then you need to take the ultimate step of accepting the light into your life because without that you will remain a stranger and a visitor in the kingdom of light. Such individual will be able to enjoy the advantage of light when he/she is before those who have light but as soon as he/she leaves their presence, he/she becomes a victim of darkness.
Such a person will not be able to operate an independent Christian life as there will constantly be the need for people with light to shine it for them to benefit from. This type of Christian life can be avoided if such individual genuinely accepts the source of the light (which is Jesus Christ) in a decision that is completely honest and personal and then can begin to enjoy the dividends of a life full of light and then be able to shine it for God’s name to be glorified in it.
May God grant us the wisdom to invite His light into our lives and willingness to shine the light to the glory of His name. Amen.
