“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” – 2 Cor. 1:20 KJV
A promise is a commitment to an act either to oneself or to others. Once made it is expected to be kept but due to human limitations or deceptions there has been several cases of promises made but not kept. This no doubt has led to the growth of distrust in the society with Christians not exempted. This has further led to doubts and suspicion, two of the major factors against unity in the society.
Human beings must learn to promise not only with a sincere heart but with the follow up prayer that God should help – Jms. 4:13-15. Today the world in one form or the other is bearing the pain of broken promises either in business relationships, religious relationships, marriages and family relationships, social relationships, etc.
As much as one may show understanding for human promises made and broken leading to distrust and doubts, same cannot be said of promises made by God. Today’s scripture reveals that no matter the number of promises made by the Almighty God, they will be fulfilled so we have no reason not to trust Him.
This is because he alone has the ability to make a pronouncement and it comes to pass with no one having the ability to stop him from the fulfilment of the promise. In addition to no one having the ability to stop Him are the following points to note:
- He is not careless in pronouncing promises. To get a promise from the Lord is for most times a reward for an act of faith in Him either in terms of recognition of a good deed (Gen. 8:20-22) or the taking of a step of faith – Gen. 22:1-19. Of course it may also be a result of his compassion as the scriptures informs us that He will have compassion on whom he desires (Ex. 33:19)
- Because he values His word even more than His name (Ps. 138:2), His reputation is at stake when His name is associated with a promise.
This is why those who are fortunate to receive a promise from Him should rest assured that what he has promised will come to pass.
Delays are likely to happen, sometimes because these promises are time based and when they were made, most of the promises were not specific on time. Anxiety would naturally set in but we have been reminded in the scriptures that anxiety is not necessary when we are in a relationship with him – Matt. 6:25-34.
Likewise we should not be unaware of the intention of the devil to always want to prove God wrong (Is. 14:12-14) in His assessment and rating of man – Ps. 8:4. His actions are always to frustrate the plan of God for His people.
That is why the latter part of today’s scripture includes the phrase “in him are yea, and in him Amen” which means all His promises in Christ is confirmed and it will be as said. This is why he that has received a promise from the Almighty God and is faithfully waiting for its fulfilment must learn to wait patiently in Jesus Christ. He is the only one that has been able to defeat the devil and made a public spectacle off him – Col. 2:15.
Between the time God makes a promise and its fulfilment is a very testing period that Christians need to double their commitment to Him and not allow delay in fulfilment shake their faith in Him as that is what the Devil will be trying to achieve. He is well informed enough to know that a doubtful person will receive nothing from the God – Jms. 1:5-8.
Do not let your awareness of time take away your knowledge of God. If He said it, He will do it (Josh. 21:45) for the glory of His name as long as you remain steadfast in Him through Jesus Christ.
